Hylton Street Permanent Way Depot
Hylton Street Permanent Way Depot, also known as Hylton Street Yard and historically North Shields Coal Depot,[1] is a small, unelectrified depot located to the south of the Yellow Line between Meadow Well and North Shields stations.
Usage

Hylton Street is where metrocars were transferred on and off the Metro network for their three-quarter life refurbishment,[2] the old ballast tamper Nexus 2437 was disposed for sale on 18 December 2017,[3] and where the flat wagon MA2 was disposed for scrap on 13 January 2026.[OR] As of 23 July 2026, it is home to the ballast hopper wagons MA26 and MA28.[OR]
Access
[edit | edit source]Hylton Street depot is linked by rail to Meadow Well Platform 2.[4][5] On foot or road, the depot is accessed from a single entrance at the end of Hylton Street, North Shields.
