Pelaw Junction

Pelaw (Metro) Junction (
PJC,
PELAWMJ) refers to two chords of the Tyne and Wear Metro network connecting Nexus infrastructure to Network Rail infrastructure (the South Hylton branch of the Green Line)[1].
Chord 1 (the "up" chord) is used for trains travelling from Pelaw Platform 1 to Fellgate Platform 1, and chord 2 (the "down" chord) is used for trains travelling from Fellgate Platform 2 to Pelaw Platform 2.

The exact boundary between the two infrastructures is at Network Rail signal T6282 for the up chord[2] and Metro signal 764 for the down chord.[3] Drivers must changeover their radios when passing these signals, from Metro Control to Tyneside ROC and vice versa.
It is the only location other than a station to show as a "Last seen" status in the Pop app, where it shows as "Pelaw Junction Platform 1" regardless of which chord the train is using.[OR]
Naming and disambiguation
[edit | edit source]In the context of the Tyne and Wear Metro, Pelaw Junction (and its three-letter code, PJC) typically refers only to the two chords with TIPLOC PELAWMJ[4]. However, it can also refer to three other junctions, which have been included in the map above.
In the context of the national network, Pelaw Junction typically refers to the junction with TIPLOC PELAW[5] where mainline trains from Heworth mainline station branch towards Fellgate, the Jarrow Branch, or formerly the Leamside Line.

Pelaw Junction can sometimes also refer to Pelaw North Junction[6] or Pelaw South Junction. Metro trains travelling from Pelaw to Fellgate pass through Pelaw North Junction and chord 1 of Pelaw Junction. Metro trains travelling from Pelaw to Hebburn only pass through Pelaw North Junction. Trains travelling from Fellgate to Pelaw pass through chord 2 of Pelaw Junction and Pelaw South Junction. Metro trains travelling from Hebburn to Pelaw only pass through Pelaw South Junction.
