Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive

Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (Tyne and Wear PTE), more commonly known by its brand name Nexus, is the passenger transport executive for Tyne and Wear.
Responsibilities
[edit | edit source]As of 8 July 2026, Nexus is responsible for:[1]
- owning and operating the Tyne and Wear Metro
- owning and operating the Shields Ferry
- providing and operating Pop cards and Transfare tickets
- providing accessible information, such as timetables, for public transport in Tyne and Wear
- monitoring the performance of local bus services
- maintaining local bus stops and managing a number of local bus stations
- contracting and subsidising the approximately 10% of local bus routes (or approximately 300 services or parts of services) considered socially necessary but that commercial operators would otherwise lack the financial incentive to run, such as:[2]
- late night and early morning services
- weekend services
- scholars' services
- NHS services
- administering local concessionary travel schemes as part of and in addition to the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme, including:
Nexus also used to be responsible for owning and operating Nexus TravelShops before they were all closed in 2020.[3]
Governance
[edit | edit source]Nexus has been externally governed by the North East Mayoral Combined Authority since 7 May 2024.[4][5] Nexus is internally governed by its managing director, who has been Cathy Massarella since January 2024.[6]
The Tyne and Wear PTE was originally governed by the Tyne and Wear County Council.[7] On 31 March 1986, the Local Government Act 1985 abolished the county council and formed the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) to assume its responsibilities for the PTE.[8] On 9 February 2009, the Local Transport Act 2008 reconstituted the PTA as the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA).[9] On 15 April 2014, the ITA was merged into the newly formed North East Combined Authority (NECA).[10] On 2 November 2018, NECA was split to form the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), and the North East Joint Transport Committee (NEJTC) was formed to assume responsibilities for Nexus.[11] On 7 May 2024, NECA and NTCA merged back to form the North East Mayoral Combined Authority (NEMCA), and NEJTC's responsibilities were transferred to the new authority.[4] NEMCA was typically still branded the North East Combined Authority until 18 May 2026 when it rebranded itself as the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.[12]
Subsidiaries
[edit | edit source]Nexus' only subsidiary is Tyneside Transport Services Limited.[13] Nexus previously wholly owned North East Metro Operations Limited, which was dissolved on 30 May 2023,[14] and Busways Travel Services Limited, which was sold to Stagecoach Group Plc in 1994.[15]
Predecessor
[edit | edit source]The Tyne and Wear PTE replaced the Tyneside PTE on 1 April 1974 after the Local Government Act 1972 formed the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear.[7]
