Pop 2.0
Pop 2.0 is a proposed upgrade to Nexus' smart ticketing infrastructure which would introduce account-based ticketing and "allow users of the Pop card to have their daily travel capped across bus, Metro, Ferry and some local rail services".[1] It is also intended to be "developed further, enabling the introduction of weekly price caps, a mobile solution across a range of wallets, and, subject to the establishment of an acceptable Business Case, acceptance of Bank Cards (cEMV) for the purposes of tapping on and tapping off".[2]
History
[edit | edit source]Pop 2.0 had been announced by the North East Combined Authority (now the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority) by 24 April 2024.[1] Pop 2.0 was originally due to launch in autumn 2024,[1] but was later delayed until spring/summer 2025,[2] then until autumn 2025,[3][4] then until spring 2026.[5][6] As of 18 July 2026, no further updates have been widely publicised.
17 July 2026 leak (Travel North East page)
[edit | edit source]At 12:34 on 17 July 2026, a page titled "New Pop Blue (Bus/Metro/Ferry)" was added to the Travel North East website, detailing new Pop PAYG and Pop Blue cards which would be linked to a "PopCentral account", and automatically calculate daily fares for "buses in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, on Tyne and Wear Metro, on the Shields Ferry and the Northumberland Line". It also explained a payment option called "Post Pay", where a user would be able to link their Pop account to their bank card, and their "bank card [would] then automatically be charged once a week based on the journeys that [they've] made". While the page did not explicitly name Pop 2.0, all the features of Pop 2.0 were included in it, so it can be reasonably speculated that these new Pop cards are how Nexus plan to implement Pop 2.0. This page was not linked to from elsewhere on the Travel North East website and, at around 17:00, the page was removed. As a result, details provided in the page should be treated as provisional and subject to change.
Provisional details revealed in this page were:
- The new Pop PAYG and Pop Blue cards would:
- launch on 1 November 2026.
- show Nexus' buses logo, Metro logo, and Ferry logo (reading "BMF") on the bottom right.
- be linked to a "Pop account", managed through the PopCentral website.
- only be topped up via the PopCentral website, and "you can't top [them] up at Metro station ticket machines, on buses, or on the Shields Ferry".
- Existing Pop PAYG and Pop Blue cards would "continue to work as they do currently" but "won't benefit from capping across different modes of transport or the 'post-pay' feature where [users] can link [their] bank card to [their] account".
- PopCentral accounts would be offered two payment options: top-up and Post Pay. Post Pay would allow users to link their PopCentral account to their bank card and their "bank card [would] then automatically be charged once a week based on the journeys that [they've] made".
- Unlike with the existing Buy & Apply site, accounts on the PopCentral website would be able to be linked to multiple Pop cards.
- Online top-ups would be useable immediately (as opposed to the existing cards, where the balance is only updated by Metro Pop validators).
- From 1 November 2026, new Pop Blue cards would "be the only way to access £1 single and £3 regionwide fares for customers aged 17-21, replacing the previous method of buying on buses, apps and ticket machines."
21 July 2026 leak (frontline staff memo)
[edit | edit source]On 21 July 2026, a memo given to frontline staff, providing a few more details about the new Pop cards, was found and circulated online. The information in the memo is noted to be "correct at April 2026", so could be subject to change. These details included:
- The rear of the cards would feature the North East Combined Authority[a] and North East Mayor logos.
- Customers would not be able to transfer their balance from an old Pop card to a new Pop card.
- Shortly after PopCentral goes live, old Pop cards would be removed from the Buy & Apply portal, and phased out entirely "eventually".
- Frontline staff would not be able to produce blank new Pop cards, since the new Pop cards must be registered with an account.
- Future developments are planned, including weekly capping from 2027.
