Travel North East (TNE) is a website (https://travelnortheast.uk) operated by Nexus on behalf of the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority. It provides travel information for the North East of England.

Travel North East consists of three distinct services: the main website, a journey planner (https://jp.travelnortheast.uk) providing multi-modal timetable information, and "PopCentral" (https://popcentral.travelnortheast.uk), a Pop card portal and Pop account manager which isn't available to the public yet but appears to be part of Pop 2.0.[OR]

Technical details

The main Travel North East website uses WordPress. The journey planning website uses a template shared between several Trapeze Group customers, and is developed using Ionic and TypeScript.[OR]

History

The travelnortheast.uk domain name was created on 30 August 2023.[1] By 6 March 2026, the website was in staging (www-staging.travelnortheast.uk). By 22 April 2026, the website was in beta (www-beta.travelnortheast.uk).[OR] From 1 May 2026 to 7 May 2026, people who had signed up with Nexus for "non-Insight Panel research" were invited to preview the beta website and provide feedback on it. On 15 June 2026, the website was in production, and it started being promoted publicly on Tyne and Wear Metro station displays.[OR] On 16 June 2026, the old Nexus website (which previously served much of the travel information now available on Travel North East) was replaced with a new corporate website.[2][3][4]

On 3 July 2025, a Pop app update was released adding a "Pop Account" section linking to PopCentral. PopCentral has also been referenced on the Nexus website. However, as of 22 July 2026, PopCentral still responds with a 403 Forbidden error.[OR]
