Travel North East
Travel North East (TNE) is a website (https://travelnortheast.uk) operated by Nexus on behalf of the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority. It provides travel information for the North East of England.
Travel North East consists of three distinct services: the main website, a journey planner (https://jp.travelnortheast.uk) providing multi-modal timetable information, and "PopCentral" (https://popcentral.travelnortheast.uk), a Pop card portal and Pop account manager which is not available to the public yet but appears to be part of Pop 2.0.
Accessibility
[edit | edit source]Nexus and North East MSA claim that Travel North East is "partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard". However, this is subject to several non-compliances and exemptions listed on the website. The main website was audited for accessibility by its provider in May 2026 using Accessibe and Axe DevTools. The journey planner was audited for accessibility by Web Usability in March 2026.[1]
Technical details
[edit | edit source]The main Travel North East website uses WordPress. The journey planning website uses a template shared between several Trapeze Group customers, and is developed using Ionic and TypeScript.
Nexus said in an email on 29 July 2026 that "To help future proof and protect the Travel North East website, we have purchased a range of similar domain names to travelnortheast.uk, longer and shorter versions.". The following domain names are all registered and, based on registration details, historical DNS records, nameservers, and certificate transparency logs, are all closely related. However, since 5 July 2024 and as of 30 July 2026, none of them (besides the canonical domain name) are being used (e.g. as redirects to the canonical domain name).

History
[edit | edit source]The domain names travelnortheast.org.uk and travelne.org.uk were both created on 24 July 2023.[2][3] travelne.org and the canonical domain name, travelnortheast.uk, were both created on 30 August 2023.[4] travelnortheast.org and travelnortheast.net were both created on 3 July 2025.[5]
By 6 March 2026, the website was in staging (www-staging.travelnortheast.uk). By 22 April 2026, the website was in beta (www-beta.travelnortheast.uk). From 1 May 2026 to 7 May 2026, people who had signed up with Nexus for "non-Insight Panel research" were invited to preview the beta website and provide feedback on it.
On 15 June 2026, the website was in production, and it started being promoted publicly on Tyne and Wear Metro station displays.[OR] On 16 June 2026, the old Nexus website (which previously served much of the travel information now available on Travel North East) was replaced with a new corporate website.[6][7][8]
On 3 July 2026, an update to the Android version of the Pop app was released adding a "Pop Account" section linking to PopCentral. PopCentral has also been referenced on the Nexus website. However, on 5 August 2026, another Pop app update removed the "Pop Account" section. As of 6 August 2026, PopCentral still returns a 403 Forbidden error.
