Y-move

A Y-move or a wye-move is an empty stock manoeuvre used to flip the orientation of trains in Gosforth Depot using the Gosforth Triangle. This is mostly done when coupling metrocars to ensure they are in an ABBA formation (i.e. coupled at their B ends). This is done by:

• Leaving the depot from one end (e.g. the east end to Benton)
• Reversing direction (i.e. by switching cabs) towards South Gosforth Platform 1 and through into Stoneyhurst Road siding
• Reversing direction a second time to pass through South Gosforth Platform 2 and onwards to the other end of the triangle (e.g. Regent Centre, or the west neck)
• Reversing direction a third time to enter the other end of the depot
